One may make a journey through the eternal city and see monuments of ancient, early Christian, Renaissance and Baroque Rome — Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, Forum, fountains, etc.
 Author: Associate Professor Dr Gijs Wallis de Vries. Dr Gijs Wallis de Vries an architectural historian at the University of Eindhoven. He obtained his PhD with a dissertation on "Piranesi and the idea of the beautiful city" in 1990, and has published a number of articles and papers on Piranesi since then.

Readers may follow the chronological order or leaf through the book at leisure, thus creating their own journey through the eternal city. A short description accompanies each view. Forming the lion's share of the text, these descriptions are not intended as catalogue articles but as poetic comments on the artful ways in which Piranesi draws the viewer into an imaginary space. Depending on the nature and impact of each view, various levels of interpretation are provided for the reader. While the introduction discusses the expression and meaning of the collected views synthetically, the individual descriptions offer a lively and evocative invitation to 'enter' them.

About Us and the Originals of the Book Art in Limited Editions is a publishing house located in the Netherlands that is producing and publishing Piranesi's Vedute di Roma. The book includes full reproductions of all the 135 etchings of the Vedute di Roma made by Giambattista Piranesi in the 18th century (plus the 2 etchings made by his son Francesco and the Pianta di Roma e del Campo Marzo) and is produced directly from a complete original Piranesi catalogue. (The Pianta will be a nine-fold inlay.) |
